Rev. Raymond L. Schultz was installed as National Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) on Sunday, Sept. 16 at Lutheran Church of the Cross, Winnipeg.
Both Rev. H. George Anderson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran church in America, and Archbishop Michael Peers, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, were prevented from attending because of transportation problems linked to the previous week’s terrorist attacks in the United States.
Outgoing national bishop of ELCIC, Bishop Telmor Sartison, preached in Bishop Anderson’s place and Bishop Donald Phillips of the diocese of Rupert’s Land stood in for Archbishop Peers.
As part of the ongoing commitment made after the signing of the Waterloo Declaration in July, Anglican leaders had intended to play a part in the formal installation of the new Lutheran national bishop.
