The September terrorist attacks in the United States hit at least one member of Canada’s Anglican community.

David Michael Barkway, 34, son of Rev. Peter Barkway and Mary Barkway of the diocese of Ottawa and an executive with the Toronto brokerage firm BMO Nesbitt Burns, was attending a business meeting in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 and died as the buildings collapsed.

A memorial service in St. James Cathedral, Toronto, on Sept. 19 filled the church with several hundred friends, relatives and business associates. The Anglican primate, Archbishop Michael Peers, also attended.

David Barkway leaves his parents, his wife Cindy, a 2-year-old son, James, and a brother, Stephen. Cindy Barkway is expecting a second child.

A notice published by the family expressed “their extreme gratitude for the enormous outpouring of love and support during this time.”
