Regional dean elected in Western Newfoundland

Coffin

Canon Percy David Coffin, 50, was elected on June 21 to be the fourth diocesan bishop of Western Newfoundland. Currently serving as regional dean for the Humber area and rector of All Saints church in Corner Brook, Nfld., Mr. Coffin was one of 11 nominees. He was elected after 10 ballots.

Bishop-elect Coffin was born and raised in Joe Batt’s Arm, Nfld. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1983 from Memorial University and a master of divinity degree in 1985 from Queen’s Theological College, both in St. John’s, Nfld. He was ordained priest in 1985 and has also served as a chaplain in the Armed Forces. His consecration as co-adjutor bishop (or, bishop with the right to succession) is scheduled for October 7 and he will be installed as diocesan bishop on Nov. 9.

He will succeed Bishop Len Whitten, who retires Oct. 31.
