Trial dates have been set at the Court of Queen’s Bench, Winnipeg, in the cases of an Anglican priest and a former priest charged with assaulting boys. James Townley-Smith, of Toronto, is scheduled to come to trial on Dec. 4, 2000, while Charles David Griggs, who lives near Winnipeg and renounced his orders in 1986, is set to face trial on Feb. 5, 2001.
The charges involve 12 boys and date back to the 1960s, ’70s and early ’80s. The assaults were alleged to have occurred when Mr. Griggs was a parish priest in Winnipeg, when he worked at an Anglican summer camp near Kenora, Ont., and when the two men worked together at an Anglican parish in Winnipeg.
