Those around us are made in the image of God

Published January 1, 2002

Dear editor,

I am bewildered by the apparent lack of perception regarding the sign of The Peace. A distraction?

The people who sit around us are made in the image of God. When we shake their hands we are transmitting the warmth of God’s love through human touch. We are putting our hand in the hand of God.

If Christ had found it “too distracting” to reach out, Lazarus would never have risen: the blind man would not have regained his sight, and the wedding feast at Cana would have been a dismal failure.
