The Canadian house of bishops has urged Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to lead international efforts aimed at addressing and dismantling the root causes of historic tensions between Sri Lanka’s Sinhala and Tamil peoples.

“These tensions will resurface and…result in much more suffering without clear and continuing pressure by international leaders and states,” they said in a communique.

The house of bishops also expressed concern over reports that members of the Sri Lankan media have been assaulted, tortured and murdered.
