Reconciliation Sunday

Published October 1, 2003

The diocese of Ottawa will mark Nov. 23 as Settlement and Reconciliation Sunday. The announcement came from the diocesan Residential Schools Settlement Commission, which is preparing parish resource materials to be distributed at the diocesan synod Oct. 24-25 in Cornwall, Ont. Next month marks a year since the federal government and General Synod, the national office of the Anglican Church of Canada, reached an agreement limiting the church’s liability over Indian residential schools. As part of the settlement, General Synod will pay $3 million and Canada’s 30 dioceses will pay $22 million over five years toward a litigation settlement fund. The diocese of Ottawa pledged a contribution of $1.6 million. Nov. 23 also marks the end of Restorative Justice Week, an initiative of the Correctional Service of Canada’s chaplaincy office in partnership with faith groups. The theme this year is Pathways to a Strengthened Community. For further, visit the Restorative Justice Week website at http://www.csc-scc.gc.ca/text/forum/restore2003/home_e.shtml.
