(ENI)-Archbishop Gregory Venables was elected and installed Nov. 7 as primate of the province of the Southern Cone of America of the Anglican Communion. Archbishop Venables serves with his wife Sylvia in Buenos Aires. He previously was bishop of Bolivia and ministered in Paraguay and England. Archbishop Venables succeeded Archbishop Maurice Sinclair, a well-known conservative voice within the Anglican church.

A resolution to permit the dioceses of Argentina and Uruguay the local option of ordaining women to the priesthood failed to obtain a majority at the province’s triennial synod. The Southern Cone also includes Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Peru.
