Priest resigns orders

Published June 1, 2005

Evangelist and author Marney Patterson said he resigned in March as a priest and member of the Anglican Church of Canada because he disagrees with a motion passed at General Synod 2004 that affirmed “the integrity and sanctity of committed adult same-sex relationships.”

In an announcement, he said the synod was “offering two options to me and to many others. The first option was to stay in the church and support same-sex unions. The second one was to resign … and in that there really wasn’t any choice for me to make.”

He is now a member of the Anglican Church in the Southern Cone (South America). Mr. Patterson wrote the 1999 book Suicide: The Decline and Fall of the Anglican Church of Canada?
