London (ACNS) – The first lay person to be appointed Chief Secretary of Church Army, Captain Philip Johanson, has been awarded the Order of the British Empire “for services to Church Army.” Brought up in Kingston upon Hull, Mr. Philip joined the Church Army in 1968. He became director of evangelism in 1984. His management and evangelism gifts were further recognised when in 1990, Lord Coggan, then-Archbishop of Canterbury, commissioned him as the first lay chief secretary of the society.
