Seeing stars

Decorative artist J.J. Coolen gilds ceiling stars with patent gold leaf during the restoration of St. John’s church, Lunenburg, N.S. David Turner, professor of astronomy at Saint Mary’s University, recently identified the stars as the constellation that would have appeared from Lunenburg at sunset on the evening of December 24, 1 BC — the “traditional” date for the birth of Jesus.
