Former trainer of servers charged

A former lay worker at a Toronto-area church has been charged with violating his bail conditions stemming from sexual assault charges laid last year.

Richard James Schenck, 56, who trained servers at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church in Etobicoke, was charged in December 1998 with indecent assault and gross indecency involving two brothers dating back to the mid-1980s.

Mr. Schenck was relieved of his duties at the church and told, as a condition of his release, not to communicate with anyone under the age of 16 except through his lawyer. Police allege he violated that condition, using e-mail on the Internet, and charged him with failure to comply Sept. 30.

The investigation is continuing.
