First woman bishop

Rev. Rosemarie Wenner, 49, has become the first woman to be elected bishop of the United Methodist Church in Germany and the denomination’s first female bishop outside the United States.

At the same time, the Old Catholic Church in Germany ordained Alexandra Caspari as its first woman priest at a recent ceremony in Karlsruhe. The Old Catholic Church was founded after the First Vatican Council in 1870 declared papal infallibility.

Ms. Wenner was elected at the German Central Conference which met in Wuppertal in February, receiving two-thirds of the 100 votes cast in the fourth ballot.
