Better than a barbershop quartet

Published April 1, 2005

A quartet of deans (past and current) of Vancouver’s Christ Church Cathedral sang at a fundraising concert for the Sorrento Centre. From left, Bishop Michael Ingham, Bishop Jim Cruickshank (ret.), Canon Herbert O’Driscoll and Dean Peter Elliott, the current dean of the diocese of New Westminster and rector of the cathedral.

Peter Elliott, dean of Christ Church Cathedral in Vancouver, diocese of New Westminster, was joined by three former cathedral deans on Jan. 21 in an unusual concert that raised funds for the Sorrento Centre, a retreat and conference centre about 75 kilometres east of Kamloops, B.C. The former deans were Canon Herbert O’Driscoll and Bishop Michael Ingham, current bishop of New Westminster, and Jim Cruickshank, retired bishop of Cariboo. They reminisced about their experiences as deans and each introduced two hymns that were personally important to them and were then performed by the cathedral choir. The hymns included Let There Be Light, from Bishop Ingham, and Be Thou My Vision from Mr. O’Driscoll.
