And MinistryMatters, the Anglican Church of Canada’s magazine for people involved in ministry, took home a first place award for general excellence in its first year of being entered in the CCP awards. The awards were announced in Winnipeg at the organization’s annual meeting, May 3-5.
Both the Anglican Journal and MinistryMatters are edited by Vianney (Sam) Carriere.
The Anglican Journal picked up a total of six awards at the Associated Church Press (ACP) convention in Minneapolis, Minn., April 22-25.
The newspaper received an award of merit, or second prize, in the category of national or international newspaper from the ACP.
The Journal was also awarded two honourable mentions for its letters to the editor and a news story written by former staff writer Kathy Blair about the Diocese of Cariboo’s financial troubles.
ACP has 175 member publications websites. It represents a combined circulation of more than 28 million readers.
The Canadian Church Press recognized the Journal in both writing and design categories. The section was published in the May 2000 issue of the Journal.
Sins of the Fathers, by freelance writer David Napier, also picked up an honourable mention for the prestigious A.C. Forrest Memorial Award.
The Journal’s Saskia Rowley won first place for layout and design of an issue, for the December 2000 issue. That issue’s front-page illustration of a knitting Madonna and child, by freelance artist Anna Payne-Krzyzanowski, garnered the paper a first place for original artwork.
Sins of the Fathers was also singled out for recognition by the ACP. It won the award of merit, or first prize, for theme issue, section or series and an honourable mention for in-depth coverage.
Staff writer Solange De Santis garnered an honourable mention from the ACP in the category of newspaper department for her regular diocesan profiles.
The CCP recognized Canon Harold Percy, a long-time former columnist for the Journal, with a first place for Sharing the Joy, a column about evangelism. In addition to picking up first place for general excellence, for the Winter, Spring and Fall 2000 issues, MinistryMatters also won an honourable mention for best feature, for its special issue, Residential Schools: Legacy and Hope.
