Bishops oversee vows

For the first time in Canada, a Lutheran bishop co-presided as an Anglican nun took her lifelong vows of poverty, celibate chastity and obedience. Bishop William Huras of the Eastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada attended the “life profession” of Sister Anne Norman of the sisterhood of St. John the Divine at the convent’s chapel in Toronto on Nov. 1. “It’s a visible sign of unity for me,” said Sister Anne, a Lutheran for 40 years before joining the Anglican church eight years ago. She and Bishop Huras have been friends for 25 years. The Anglican Church of Canada and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada approved a new, closer relationship called “full communion” last July.
