New church opens

After 35 years of “praying, planning and fundraising,” a new church at Ahtahkakoop First Nation, near Canwood, Sask, was formally consecrated on Dec. 16.

The bishop of Saskatchewan, Anthony Burton, led the consecration ceremony for the Church of St. Simeone and St. Anna, which also honoured the memory of Chief John Ahtahkakoop (1816-1896), who had sought out a missionary for the community.

“Visitors from across the diocese were present for the service, including many from neighboring Leask, Mont Nebo, Canwood, Spiritwood and Leoville, who had cancelled their services that day to support their neighbours at Ahtahkakoop,” reported the Saskatchewan Anglican, the diocesan newspaper. It was built with the support of the Anglican Foundation.
