Lutheran National Convention begins in Vancouver

Canadian Lutherans are gathering for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada’s (ELCIC) biennial National Convention, which will take place in Vancouver at the University of British Columbia campus from June 25 to 28.More than 400 delegates, staff and guests will participate in the convention meetings and worship services. Guests, representing some of the church bodies with which the ELCIC shares ministries and history, include Bishop Munib Younan of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land; Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada; Rev. Robert Bugbee, president of Lutheran Church-Canada; and Mark Hanson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and president of the Lutheran World Federation. Bishop Younan, Archbishop Hiltz and Bishop Hanson will each lead Bible studies. Delegates will vote on national budgets for 2010 and 2011; a resolution on the Holy Land which will see the ELCIC supporting and working for justice and peace in the region through prayer, education, advocacy and accompanying; as well as additional motions from congregations and individuals that are presented at convention.
