Carriere named acting general secretary of General Synod

Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, has announced the appointment of Sam Carriere, director of communications and information resources, to the position of acting general secretary of General Synod.

Carriere will serve in this capacity until Archdeacon Michael Pollesel returns. Last December, Pollesel was severely injured in a car accident. His wife, Gini, was killed, and his mother, Maria, was seriously injured.

A veteran journalist, Carriere worked for The Globe and Mail for 22 years before joining the Anglican Journal in 1990 as news editor. He was editor of the Journal from 2000 to 2003.

Now, Carriere will be oversee the work of  General Synod and the Council of General Synod (CoGS) as well as day-to-day operations of the national office and all staff.  In addition, Carriere will be responsible for presenting the work of General Synod to the church’s 30 dioceses across Canada and to the general public.
