The parish of St. Mary’s, Sioux Lookout, Ont., in the diocese of Keewatin, joined the annual Day of Prayer for Community Healing in September organized by the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, where suicide has reached an alarming rate.
Deputy grand chief Goyce Kakegamic told Wawatay News that 291 residents had committed suicide since 1986. “That is a tremendous amount of people. They’re not unstable or diseased. They are just normal people who felt life had become worthless, futureless.”
