Need to redefine church

National Indigenous Anglican Bishop Mark MacDonald has urged the Anglican Church of Canada to “find other ways to be church,” especially among the marginalized sectors of society.

At the recent first National Theological Conference in Montreal, Bishop MacDonald said the church is “far removed” from the reality lived by young aboriginal girls in urban areas, for instance, where one in three tries to kill herself or falls victim to sex trafficking. “…We can and must raise our standards…,” he said, adding that indigenous ministry works best when there are “high standards of discipleship, coupled with a high degree of sharing in a collegial and communal ministry.”
