CoGS appoints Ian Alexander interim general secretary

Archdeacon Alan Perry, general secretary of General Synod, has taken a leave of absence effective June 3, acting primate Archbishop Anne Germond said in a June 5 statement.

Council of General Synod (CoGS) appointed Canon (lay) Ian Alexander as interim general secretary at a special meeting the next day, Germond said.

The general secretary is the chief operations officer of General Synod, helping organize meetings of General Synod and CoGS, acting as secretary of both bodies and managing the daily work of the national office. Perry’s leave occurs shortly before the next meeting of General Synod, which will take place June 23 to 29 in London, Ont. in the diocese of Huron.

“I realize that this news comes at a particularly challenging time, with General Synod 2025 less than three weeks away,” Germond said. “I would like to assure you that plans are in place for the uninterrupted continuation of the operations of General Synod and the organization of our upcoming national gathering.”

Germond did not say why Perry was taking a leave of absence or how long it would be. The Anglican Journal reached out to Perry for comment but had not received a reply at the time of publication.

Alexander, the interim general secretary, is currently serving as prolocutor. The highest office in General Synod after the primate, the prolocutor is responsible for helping administer General Synod meetings and affairs.
