Garment workers’ plight featured
Two British Columbia women will be leading a workshop dealing with the plight of garment workers around the world at the Eighth Assembly of the World Council of Churches in Harare, Zimbabwe, this December.
Gloria Cope of Cowichan Station, Vancouver Island, and Sue MacKay Smith of Penticton, B.C., will provide an overview of the plight of apparel workers in the globalized economy, and the campaign to pressure retailers and manufacturers to implement minimum codes with independent monitoring and consumer labels allowing consumers to “buy clean.”
So much interest has been shown in the workshop that it will be offered twice during the assembly rather than the one time originally scheduled.
