PWRDF sends aid to Lac Megantic

The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund is sending a “solidaritygrant” of $5,000 to assist with relief efforts in Lac Mégantic, Que.,where a July 6 train derailment and explosion is presumed to have killed47 people; victims are still being identified.

Heavy rains drench cardboard cathedral

Christchurch New Zealand’s transitional cardboard cathedral has become sodden following heavy rainfall in late June, but a church spokesperson expressed confidence that the project will still be completed next month.

Primate offers prayers to Lac-Megantic

Archbishop Fred Hiltz has expressed his sympathy and offered his church’s prayers to the community of Lac-Mégantic, where at least 15 have been killed and more than 30 buildings were destroyed after a runaway train hurtled into the centre of town and exploded.

Theological college to operate for next year

The College of Emmanuel and St. Chad has been given new life for at least one more school year. Last June, it was announced that the theological school in Saskatoon would close, at least temporarily while a restructuring took place, but the college announced on May 23 that it would operate for the 2013-2014 school year.

The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund is accepting donations for relief efforts in Oklahoma, following the tornado that devastated Moore, a suburb south of Oklahoma City, earlier this week.

Huron awards three honorary degrees

London,Ont.’s Huron University College presented three honorary degrees tothree distinguished people at its theology convocation on May 9.Governor General David Johnston received a doctor of divinity degree,while Archbishop Thabo Makgabo, primate of the Anglican Church ofSouthern Africa, and Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, both received honorary doctorate degrees.

PWRDF sends aid to earthquake survivors in China

The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) has announced that it will contribute a $1,5000 grant to aid victims of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Sichuan province in China on April 20. The quake and its aftershocks killed more than 200 people and injured thousands.
