The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund is sending a “solidarity grant” of $5,000 to assist with relief efforts in Lac Mégantic, Que., where a July 6 train derailment and explosion is presumed to have killed 47 people; victims are still being identified.
The grant will be administered through the Anglican diocese of Quebec, which will forward the grant to the Catholic archdiocese of Sherbrooke. The Anglican church in the community was closed many years ago. Bishop Dennis Drainville of the diocese of Quebec, who visited the community the day after the explosion to offer prayers and pastoral care for people there, expressed “our confidence in our Roman Catholic sisters and brothers, who are able to be much more present on the ground, to determine where help is needed most.”
