Hellen Grace Wangusa, the United Nations Africa Co-ordinator of the Millennium Development Goals, has been named as the next Anglican United Nations Observer.
Canon Kenneth Kearon, Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, announced the appointment of Ms. Wangusa on Oct. 3. She begins her work as Anglican Observer in January 2007 in her office at the Episcopal Church Center in New York. Her appointment follows the retirement last July of Archdeacon Taimalelagi Fagamalama Tuatagaloa-Leota.
A layperson, Ms. Wangusa did undergraduate studies at Makerere University in Kampala, where she worked as a teaching assistant and later as a lecturer for the literature department. She later worked with the Anglican Church of Uganda as the national women’s co-ordinator and as the national link person with the global Mothers’ Union movement and the Anglican Communion. From 1997-2004, she worked as co-ordinator of the African Women’s Economic Policy Network, advocating for polices that ensured the needs of women, children and those from marginalized groups were met.
