Excellent analogy of a ship but a ship must also watch out for the rocks, just under the surface sand bars and other obstacles. The ship`s crew then must make the right decision about what to do about those obstacles -- simply avoid them or maybe take a longer term perspective and destroy those obstacles so even other ships will not run aground and get stuck in the mud or become too severely damaged to be viable any more. On those decisions the future of the ship will very likely be decided.
