If you do not believe in what the Church professes, why go to that Church? Why claim to be _______ when you do not believe what the __________ Church believes?

A bigger question is whether the Church should change its teachings to conform to the people or should the people conform to the Church? The Bible has only one answer for that one.

Thank you, Gillian. This is the elephant in the room that hurts. It is like being told by your parents to keep believing in Santa Claus after his cover is blown. I hope other priests will consider this and free the people from public dishonesty.

I have found some very meaningful Affirmations of Faith (UK Anglican, Celtic, Church of Scotland, Lutheran ) which we use at our house church. I agree that the Nicene Creed (4th C) has little meaning for many people now-a-days.

I just want to say with the greatest of respect that some of us (I suspect many from my conversations) are unable to participate in a liturgy where we are required to stand and say out loud in the creeds that which we do not necessarily believe. It is mentally brain twisting. This is a blip in the liturgy that causes one to be dishonest in public or oblivious to utterances (which diminishes the rest of the liturgy). How many folks who find this intellectual dishonesty are part of the march away from the church?

I was interested in this article about house churches. Although ordained in the Diocese of Toronto, I have served in Algoma and Nova Scotia Dioceses and am now canonically resident in the AngIican Diocese of Cuernavaca in Mexico. I served various churches (Mexican and ex-pat)in that area before moving to the small town of Tepoztlan 5 years ago. Knowing of several residents here from various countries, and following the example of an Anglican priest cousin in another small community in Mexico, I approached our bishop with the suggestion of starting our Mission of St. Francis. We use the terrace of our garden with a view of the surrounding mountains and have gathered a faithful group of wonderful, dedicated people numbering from about 10 to 20+ attendees. We also have some Mexicans attend so often offer bilingual services. This seems to meet a need in our community so it has been heartening indeed. Baptisms and weddings have also branched out from our small mission.
In certain circumstances, house churches do serve a purpose. After the earthquake here 2 1/2 years ago, worship outside affected churches and house churches have become a reality for many communities.
