Respected evangelist dies

Terry Winter, one of Canada’s most prominent evangelists and broadcasters, died on Dec. 10 following a brain hemor-rhage. He was 56.

Mr. Winter had hosted The Terry Winter Show since 1975. The show currently airs on 28 Canadian stations, featuring interviews with leading international Christians. An estimated audience of one million people in Canada and the Northern U.S. tune in weekly.

In addition, for more than 30 years, Mr. Winter conducted hundreds of crusades across the country. He was a frequent speaker at evangelistic banquets, denominational conferences and theological schools and seminaries.

He participated in the Lausanne Conferences on world evangelism and the Billy Graham Conference in Amsterdam, as well as several North American evangelical conferences.

Several of the world’s Christian leaders expressed their sorrow about his death. Among them was Rev. Michael Green, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s advisor for evangelism. He called Mr. Winters, “A beloved friend, and colleague in the Gospel. Family, friends and Canadian Christianity will miss you terribly.”

Gary Walsh, president of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada said Christians could relate to Mr. Winters’ commitment to Christ and the Gospel.

“Genuine sorrow has swept across the evangelical movement at the news of Terry Winter’s passing,” he said. “Christians everywhere identified with his authentic witness and ministry. From grieving hearts we thank God for the profound contribution Terry made to kingdom work.”

Mr. Winter is survived by his wife Joan, their four grown children, his father and a sister.
