As Pope Benedict met with the Chief of the Assembly of First Nations and Chief Phil Fontaine, in April, 2009, he expressed sorrow, regret and sympathy. Chief Fontaine said he hoped this message and expression would “close the book “on the issue of apologies for residential school survivors. I would hope and wish that people would respect Chief Fontaine enough to accept this.
