Normally I avoid teasing my blood pressure by reading the letters to the editor in the Journal, but one managed to catch my eye: William Blizzard (September), who referred to conditions under which he would “embrace Essentials teaching on human sexuality willingly.”
Out of sheer curiosity I re-examined 1 Timothy 2:8-15 and was delighted to discover that: (1) the eighth verse is still what it used to be (and which we would all be well advised to ponder); (2) the rest of the passage has not yet been re-written to expurgate Paul’s insistent “I,” and that (3) Galatians 3:27-28 is, at this point in time, still intact. So, for that matter, is Exodus 39, where Moses describes in detail priestly vestments henceforth to be used in ministry in the sanctuary – but I can’t, for the life of me, think of any clergy in the Anglican church – male or female – who are running about with pomegranates and gold bells on the hem of their robes, and I devoutly hope that there are none whose “essentials” run to finely woven linen drawers!
