Memorial project raises funds for Uganda school

The Kalagala High School, which is supported by the Uganda Project, promotes skills development.

A project designed to pay tribute to a woman from the diocese of Rupert’s Land who drowned while saving a life in Guatemala is collecting musical instruments, motorbike tools and money to establish a high school music department and a motorbike supply storage area for students and community members of Kalagala, Uganda.

The Uganda Project, launched in memory of Diane Kroeker, is scheduled to hold a fundraising social on June 10, at Winnipeg’s Waverly Heights Community Centre.

“The project is a way to pull together her village of people and carry on her memory,” wrote her husband, Irv, in a letter explaining the project. He explained that high school education opportunities are limited in Uganda. In Kalagala, however, a high school was built in 2002 to provide equal educational opportunities for boys and girls. “Now we want to help the school expand even further,” he said.

A musical tribute kicked off the project last April at Winnipeg’s St. John’s Cathedral, raising $3,000. The project has so far raised more than $6,500; the goal is to raise $25,000.
