South African Archbishop and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Tutu is awarded an Honorary Doctor of Civil Laws Degree from Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, Que. Bishop’s Principal, Janyne M. Hodder, said the founding mission of the university more than 150 years ago was to provide a liberal education and to train clergy for the Anglican Church.

“By awarding this degree to Archbishop Tutu,” she said, “Bishop’s is celebrating its Anglican roots and paying tribute to a distinguished member of the worldwide Anglican Communion.”

The ceremony was preceded by a celebration of the eucharist in St. Mark’s Chapel, the oldest university chapel in Canada. The 67-year-old archbishop received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 and the Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Award in 1988 for his efforts to rid his country of apartheid. He recently chaired South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
