Calgary’s seventh bishop will bring a strong background in mediation, counselling and ecumenical work to the office.
Archdeacon Barry Hollowell, rector of St. George’s Anglican Church in St. Catharines, Ont., was chosen on the fifth ballot in a day-long electoral synod on Nov. 5.
Many delegates and observers saw the archdeacon as a moderate.
Archdeacon Hollowell, 51, was born, raised and ordained in the United States. He came to Canada in 1974 as assistant curate at Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton, N.B. He served as Anglican chaplain at the University of New Brunswick from 1975 – 1986, when he was named rector of St. George’s Anglican Church in St. Catharines, Ont. He became archdeacon of Lincoln in February 1991.
He has served on a number of boards and committees, including chairing the Christian education department, Fredericton; member of the Diocese of Niagara’s Child Sexual Abuse Response Team; LARC 2000 (the Lutheran, Anglican and Roman Catholic board planning millennium celebrations); Inter-Church Inter-faith Relations Committee (Niagara); and Financial Development and Stewardship Committee (Niagara).
Archdeacon Hollowell holds a BA (History/Sociology); an MA (Theology); an MDiv, a Masters in Pastoral Studies; an MA in Psychology (Counselling) and has taken numerous courses in mediation and dispute resolution.
Archdeacon Hollowell’s wife, Linda Barry-Hollowell, is a corporate lawyer. The couple has three children: Katherine, 21; Joshua, 18; and Mark, 15.
