If you find your way to summer events in Fergus, Ont., don’t miss the chip wagon – known as The Jolly Friars – which has been helping raise funds for St. James’ church. The brainchild of Canon Steve Witcher, rector of St. James’, the chip wagon has been an essential cog in the church’s fundraising wheel. In 2005 alone, it contributed more than $20,000 towards retiring the debt on the church’s building fund. It is not an easy job working at The Jolly Friars: a three-day stint at a truck show involves a team of at least six people taking shifts from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Others take care of buying the supplies, doing the “prep” work and cleaning up.
