The Anglican Journal received eight awards last night, including two Awards of Excellence, at the annual conference of the Associated Church Press (ACP) in Washington, D.C. The ACP is the oldest interdenominational religious press association in North America. In the category “Newspaper Front Page” Journal Art Director Saskia Rowley Fielder was recognized with an Award of Excellence for the October 2009 front page. The judges commented: “Nice balance of elements and variety of illustrations including line drawings. Plenty of stories to appeal to a variety of readers.” A photograph of a homeless man sleeping on the street (November 2009) also received an Award of Excellence. The photograph, by Jay Black, accompanied a feature article written by the Rev. Matthew Johnson about his street ministry in Vancouver’s notorious Downtown Eastside. “Excellent composition, great framing, fantastic story in a competitive category. This image stands out as having it all.” An Award of Merit was given to “Re-thinking how we do church” by Journal editor Kristin Jenkins (September 2009) for her article on declining enrollment in the Anglican church. Judges said: “This obviously is a very complicated matter that church leaders are dealing with delicately. The writer captures that.” In addition, the entire November 2009 issue of the Anglican Journal received an Award of Merit for design. “Well designed piece. I really like the feature pages,” commented the judge of Saskia Rowley Fielder’s art direction and design. “Typography is solid throughout. Overall consistency is pleasing and inviting.” Journal staff writer Marites (Tess) N. Sison received an Honourable Mention for her coverage of the Anglican Consultative Council in Jamaica. In addition, an Honourable Mention was given to:* Letters to the Editor* The design of the feature article, “Burundi Part 1” (Marites N. Sison, May 2009)* The illustration “Unto us a child is born” by Joyce Cosby (December 2009)
