Douglas John Hall’s book ”God and human suffering” is a thoughtful reflection on the problem of evil , i really appreciate the distinction he makes between the suffering intrinsic to Adam before the fall , whether one interprets it as literal or symbolic , to the suffering after the fall ( he makes parallels between the sinless jesus and the pre-fall Adam ) certain aspects of what we call suffering — loneliness , experience of limits , temptation , anxiety — are necessary parts of God’s good creation , redemptive suffering as opposed to destructive suffering after the fall , the tragic dimension of life . Very refreshing analysis of human suffering , blessedness implies some experience of suffering .

It was wonderful to read your short precis on the life and work of Doug Hall. It is so long since I have heard of, or from, either him or Rhoda that I have mistakenly assumed that one or both of them had ‘gone on to their just rewards’. It is so good to know that he is still being sought out for his keen mind and his incredibly clear thought. Thank you Wayne and, of course, Doug and Rhoda.
