Derwyn D. Jones, former bishop of Huron who had an interest in media and was a skillful musician, died on March 8 at the age of 79.
Ordained in 1946, he became the ninth bishop of Huron in 1984, after first being elected suffragan bishop in 1982, and co-adjutor bishop (assistant bishop with right to succession) in 1983.
Bishop Jones wrote a popular column, For the Sake of Argument, for the diocesan newspaper Huron Church News for a number of years. He also contributed to the London Free Press and was involved in radio and television, including programs for the CBC and the popular Sunday morning show, Music of Faith, on a London, Ont., radio station.
As a bishop, he tackled issues such as the plight of Canadian farmers, apartheid in South Africa, ecology, and was a firm opponent of Sunday shopping.
