Carey calls for action

The Archbishop of Canterbury and Cardinal Basil Hume added their voice to the call by Sudanese bishops recently to Foreign Secretary Robin Cook to intervene in the civil war in Sudan. In a joint letter to Mr. Cook they pointed to the lack of political will in both the United Nations and in individual countries to make a significant contribution to the peace process. “We wish to signal to you now that Catholics and Anglicans in this country and, we believe, around the world, are united in our hope that the United nations and its constituent member states will urgently consider this crisis and take action which will bring serious pressure to bear on all the parties to the conflict to bring the war to an end,” they wrote. The letter follows a recent meeting between the Pope and Archbishop Carey in which joint action on Sudan was discussed.
