Calgary-area doctor honoured for his work with children

Dr. Robert Haslam, a pediatric neurologist and an Anglican from the diocese of Calgary has been named a member of the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honour.

He joined 36 other recipients at an investiture ceremony presided over by Governor General Michaelle Jean at Rideau Hall on Feb. 22.

A media statement issued by the Office of the Governor General called Dr. Haslam “an inspiration to the medical community” and “a recognized leader in pediatric neurology who has had a major impact on the care of children with nervous system disorders.”

An active leader in the Meota parish, Dr. Haslam is also widely known for being an educator, administrator, and community leader. He is known internationally as a strong advocate for children with neurological and developmental disabilities; in Canada, he has been a passionate advocate for First Nations children in northern Ontario.

Dr. Haslam was responsible for establishing the department of pediatrics at the University of Calgary. He also served as chief of pediatrics at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and provided leadership at the University of Toronto and the Hospital for Sick Children.

He is currently head of the new Child Development Research Centre in Calgary, which is being built beside the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Haslam and his wife, Barbara, live in the Okotoks area.
