I am a 69 year old male. Usually I don't bother reading these kinds of reports. When I see a photo of three female clergy, I think "female tribalism". I also read a certain "rah, rah, rah" attitude, treating the office of Bishop as a middle-class career achievement, "We have made it, we are successful women in todays society.". The Bishop as a career goal. I remember Bishop Victoria Matthews, who was in Edmonton, said once, " I don't want to be known as a woman bishop. I want to be known as a bishop". The above report says the diocese of Amazonia is a mission diocese. But it does not give any details. Also, I am concerned about the pride which Canadian Liberals have. We ordained women many years before England did, and before Brazil did. So we are good, progressive liberal Christians. And, Bishop Nichols plans to return to Brazil, and give talks about same-sex relationships. Wow, aren't we Canadian Anglicans wonderfully enlightened Christians!!!! Can I point out, if one goes to the Canadian north, there are mission parishes struggling for survival. Across the prairies, there are many struggling parishes. Here in Vancouver, B.C., we also have parishes with half time clergy, and parishes which have had no clergy for two years. There are many small congregations, worried and anxious about their survival in the Canadian Church. Now, this Brazilian Bishop, Marinez Bassotto, may be a serious, faithful person. I did note she is married and has two children. I assume her children are grown, and don't need a mother. But, I think the joy Bishop Nichols experiences is a human joy. How does this joy compare with what Jesus teaches in Matthew 25.14-30, the parable of the talents. "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much;, enter into the joy of your master". So, oughtn't Christian joy be celebrated at the end of a life of discipleship, not at the beginning?
