Archbishop of Canterbury ‘outraged’ by Mumbai attacks

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has expressed his “shock and outrage at the appalling atrocities”  in Mumbai and has offered prayers on behalf of the Anglican Communion for those who have lost loved ones or are caring for those who have been injured and affected by the siege.”People everywhere stand in solidarity with the innocent and in condemnation of those who would destroy innocent lives out of evil and misguided motives,” said Archbishop Williams in a letter addressed to the High Commissioner of India, Shiv Shankar Mukherjee. The Anglican Communion News Service released portions of the letter to the media. At least 119 people were killed and 288 injured when suspected Islamic militants – armed with machine guns and grenades – launched a well-coordinated attack against 10 sites in the city Nov. 26. These included the city’s largest train station, five-star hotels frequented by foreigners, and Chabad Lubavitch, the headquarters of a Jewish outreach group. There are conflicting reports on whether the siege has ended in the Taj Mahal hotel and at the Chabad Lubavitch office where gunmen had taken hostages.
