The Grey Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of Pembroke have donated $1 million toward a $2-million capital campaign for Cornerstone, an innovative housing project for women in the diocese of Ottawa (Feb. p. 1).

The Grey Sisters’ donation gives the campaign a “really strong footing,” says Sue Garvey, director of Cornerstone, adding that about $1.4 million has now been raised. Federal, provincial and municipal governments have provided a total of $9.5 million toward the $11.5-million facility. Parishes are now being invited to “adopt a room” at a cost of $5,500.

Construction of the new residence will start at the end of March 2010 and apartments will be ready by April 2011.—Leigh Anne Williams
