Several events around the country marked the 30th anniversary, on Nov. 30, of the ordination of women to the priesthood in the Anglican Church of Canada.

Among the events:

  • At the Sorrento Centre in Sorrento, B.C., more than 70 Anglican women priests attended a conference that ended with a eucharist at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Kamloops, B.C. During the conference, bishops Ann Tottenham and Victoria Matthews (two of the church’s three female bishops) led plenary sessions. Canon Alice Medcof spoke about the international opportunities in which she has participated and encouraged others who may want to explore this avenue of ministry. Canon Linda Nicholls, co-ordinator for dialogue at General Synod’s faith, worship and ministry department in Toronto, spoke about the “national perspective” concerning women in ministry.

  • In Vancouver, a celebratory service took place on Nov. 30 at Christ Church Cathedral, with Rev. Linda St. Clair presiding and Rev. Margaret Marquardt as preacher.
  • At Rension College at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ont., the Florence Li Tim Oi Reading Room was dedicated on Oct. 20. It was named after the first woman ordained to the priesthood, irregularly, in 1944.
  • A francophone celebration took place on Nov. 30 in St. Michael’s church in Quebec City, with a round table discussion afterward and traditional evensong.
