I too was a member of the Vimy Oakes project and had a chance to tour the battlefields of the western front on the 100th anniversary of Vimy. My grandfather was a Lt. with the Cdn. artillery group of the 102nd North British Columbians at the battles of Vimy, Somme, Ypres and Lens. He also served in WW2 and retired as a Colonel and Member of the Order of the British Empire.
The oaks were raised from a stand of tress that now sit on the site of a Chinese Baptist Church at Kennedy and Passmore in Scarborough - not far from Grace Church. A short book on the project and history has been published by Scholastic Books..

Thanks for this helpful summary of the life of this Chaplain. As a chaplain myself (though in healthcare) it's always a cutting edge experience, where you work within a 'secular' institution to serve the Mission of God. It affects the organisation and, hopefully, it affects the Church.
